Ooty, the 'queen of hill-stations'
of India, is a hill-resort standing at 7,349 ft above
sea level. Also known as Udhagamandalam or Ootacamund,
it is situated in the Nilgiri mountain ranges in Tamil
Nadu. It is known for it's salubrious climate and scenic
beauty.
There are breath-taking views of tea-plantations, and
undisturbed grassy meadows. For the more adventurous,
there are trekking and hang-gliding.

| Ooty lake & Botanical Gardens |
|
Ooty lake is an attractive picnic
spot where one can enjoy boating, lake garden and toy train and
Botanical gardens are beautifully maintained and including numerous
mature species.

| Pykara |
|
Pykara boasts of well protected fenced sholas,
Toda settlement, undistributed grassy meadows and also a healthy
wildlife habitat. The Pykara dam and the reservior attracts many
tourists.

| Wenlock Downs |
|
A vast expanse of undulating landscape offering
Gymkhana Club, the Government Sheep Farm and Hindustan Photo Films
Company besides pleasure of long stroll on quite roads.

| Dodabetta |
|
Dodabetta, literally 'big mountain', is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu, lying at the junction of Western and Eastern Ghats and offer beautiful vista of the Nilgiri hills ranges.

| Kalhatti Falls |
|
This lovely picnic spot is located on the Kalhall
slopes, about 13 km from Ooty. Kalhatti Falls drop some 131 ft down.

| Avalanche |
|
Avalanche, known after an avalanche in the area
in 1823, is one of the best spots for trout fishing. Rods can be
hired here from the trout hatchery.

| Mukurthi Peak & National Park |
|
The Mukurthi National Park, located on the south-eastern
corner of the Nilgiris plateau, contains a viable population of
Nilgiri Thar. The Silent Valley is located on the western side of
these ranges.

| Kotagiri |
|
The oldest hill-station, Kotagiri, 29 km from
Ooty, is noted for it's favourable climate and natural scenery.
Rangaswami rock and pillar, Kodanand view point, St. Catherine falls
and Elk falls are worth seeing.

| Dolphin's Nose |
|
This ideal picnic spot is 12 km from Ooty. Here
one can enjoy the micro climate and can also take a glimpse of the
Catherine Falls.

| St. Stephens Church |
|
St. Stephens Church, built in 1829, is the oldest
church in the Nilgiris. It's huge wooden beams came from the palace
of Tipu Sultan. The attached cemetery contains the graves of many,
as well as the Ooty pioneer, including John Sullivan -- the founder
of Ooty.

| Government Museum |
|
The Government Museum has items of tribal objects,
district's ecological details and representative sculptural arts
and crafts of Tamil Nadu.

| Glenmorgan |
|
Glenmorgan is an ecologically rich forestry spot
lying 17 km from Ooty. There are winch trolley's running from Glenmorgan
viewpoint to power house at Singara.

| Heritage Steam Charriot |
|
Heritage Steam Charriot is a very interesting, train based excursion tour that is operated on weekends.

| Fun City |
|
An amusement park, recently added to the entertainment
provisions of Ooty, is located 3 km from the down-town on the road
to Coonoor and provides a number of interesting rides.

| Angling |
|
Good fishing for trout, carp and other fish is
possible in many lakes and streams of the Nilgiri mountains. Fishing
licences are issued by the Assistance Director of Fisheries.

| Tea Estates |
|
The Nilgiris are famous for it's tea estates.
Commercial plantations came into existence in the Nilgiris around
1853, though tea plants were thriving in Tamil Nadu earlier to this.
