Places of Interest in Chennai
 
Due to its location, Chennai is known as the Gateway of Southern India and also the 'Queen of the Coromandel'. Stretching 19 km along the Coromandel Coast and extending about 8 km inland, Chennai has the privilege of housing two major rivers, the Coovam and Adyar river as well as the historic Buckingham Canal. Airy and spacious with verdant green patches and beaches, Chennai has played a notable role in deciding the political destiny of India on many occasions.
 
Fort St. George

It occupies a place of pride and prominence in Chennai. The state legislature and the secretarait are located in Fort St. George.
 
Kapaleeswarar Temple
The ancient Shiva temple is a delightful introduction to Dravidian temple sclupture and architecture.
 
Sri Parthasarathy Temple
This temple, located in Triplicane, is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It was originally built by the Pallavas in the 8th century A.D.
 
Santhome Cathedral
Built by Portuguese in the 14th and 15th century, this Cathedral is named after St. Thomas. Historically important, it is one of the pilgrimages for the Christian community.
The Theosophical Society
The world headquarters of the 'theosophical society' formed to facilitate and encourage the study of comparative religions, philosophy and science are situated in Adyar.
 
Kalakshetra
Founded in 1936 in Thiruvanmiyur, beyond Elliots beach, is Kalakshetra or 'temple of art'.
 
Birla Planetarium
Situated at Kotturpuram, it is the most modern planetarium in the country, built in the memory of B.M. Birla -- the well known industrialist.
 
Elliots Beach
A quite and calm beach, it is an ideal place to enjoy the sun. The Velankanni church and the Ashtalakshmi temple on end of the beach attracts a large number of pilgrims.
 
Valluvar Kottam
A unique bit of modern building in the city is this huge memorial hall dedicated to the poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, dominated by a towering temple car in stone.
 
Anna Zoological Park
It is the biggest zoological park in south Asia and is building-up superb collection of tropical mammals, birds and reptiles amongst others.
 
V.G.P. Golden Beach Resort
Skilfully planned beach resort with sculptured vignettes from the past, folk dances and enthnic sea food cuisine
 
The Marina
Thikse monastery, 19 km from Leh, is spectacularly one of the largest and architecturally the most impressive gompas in Leh. It has images, stupas and wall-paintings of the Buddha which are quiet exquisite.
 
Kali Bari
Kali Bari means "the house of Goddess Kali". It is a great spiritual institution, a unique temple consisting of a peaceful meditation hall.
 
MGR Film City
MGR Film City is set up by the govt. of Tamil Nadu. It houses various locations and settings for film-shooting, besides dubbing and re-recording theatres. The software city is coming up nearby.
 
MGM Dizzy World
MGM Dizzy World is a 27 acre, children's amusement park. Water Chute, parachute tower, pirate boat and a 110 feet "dizee shake" challenger and visual reality are some of the attractions.
